Most HTPCnews.com readers will remember that we've reviewed an x15e before. Back then OrigenAE was named Uneed, they have since then renamed and are going to have all sorts of new products coming our way in the extremely near future. We are under NDA on some of these, but we can attest to the fact that they have some pretty cool stuff on the way besides the S210. S210 External Features To give you an idea of size... That is a 12 inch widescreen LCD on the front of that case. Before we jump into the internals of this case, I'd like to point out some of the sweet options on the front of this case. First of all, many people will wonder where the power button is located. We didn't find it at first, however they have embedded their logo with a soft touch power button inside the O. If you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't have a clue. This could prove to be a problem for people who have small children and system builders who want their own name on the front of the case... But for the average user, it's pretty damn cool. Next up, notice the slits on the lower section of the case? (see below) These are dual IR receivers located in the gun slits. We are told they work well, despite being so tiny, on receiving the IR transmissions. It is unknown if the receiver will be MCE compatible. Well, so now we know where the IR receivers are, but what about the DVD tray and card readers, etc... Well, much to our approval they are located directly behind the 12inch LCD. Pressing the top of the LCD unlocks it and allows it to lower, revealing the drive bays. OrigenAE wanted us to make sure and let the readers know that this case is simply a prototype of a case that will be going into production. What you see here is not the final version and they'll do some refinements behind the display before the case goes on sale. (good thing too, it's kind of ugly back there isn't it?!) Flipping the case around to the backside shows us... A massive fan. Now I know what you are thinking, that's a 120mm fan... Well, you're close, it's a 140mm fan and it ran dead silent from what we could tell in the private demo we had of the case. I am sure you've already noticed this case has one piece of aluminum that covers the two sides as well as the front. While we have seen this on higher end Home Theater gear, it's a first on a production bound HTPC case as far as we know. S210 Internal Features So, jumping into the interior of this case shows some of the hidden treasures that people building high end "Media Servers" (not MCE / HTPC's) will adore, twelve hard drive bays. The inside of this case is something different than anything we've seen before here at HTPCnews. If you look at the mounting system and structure of the case, it doesn't look like a metal in this picture. However, it is Aluminum that has been melted and mixed with some sort of noise absorption material that bonds directly with the aluminum. To the touch you can tell that it is aluminum there, it's light weight but doesn't sound the same when thumped with your finger. It's extremely rigid and makes no noise. This was OrigenAE's solution to quieting 12 hard drives in one case. The type of material being mixed into the aluminum is unknown at this time. If you look closely you'll also notice that these mounts look like large heat sinks, that's be cause they are. Supposedly the large heat sinks will help keep the twelve hard drives cool enough to operate. The current internal structure allows for a single DVD drive and one 3 1/4 external drive bay. Since this case is tall but not deep, it is unknown if they'll add any drives lower than these two. Instead we are guessing they'll include the controls for the LCD behind it, somewhere below the 3 1/4 drivebay. And there's one last shot of the S210 to keep you wanting more. If you want more information on the S210 please be sure to check back at HTPCnews.com. We will have the first review of this case on the net and we're going to have a pretty awesome giveaway that'll make people drool. Now on to the Conclusion of the show. |
